Triathletes try again after postponement

Sunday?s Shell Gold Cup Triathlon and Duathlon, which was postponed because of the bad weather, has been rescheduled for this Sunday at the same venue ? Clearwater Beach in St. David?s.

The junior individual and team triathlons for ages five to 15 over various distances and the Tri-a-Triathlon for adult beginners will start at 8.30 a.m. and the senior sprint triathlon ( 750 metre swim/20K bike/5Krun) and duathlon ( 2.5K run/20K bike/2.5K run) for individuals and teams will get underway at 9.30 a.m.

Defending champion Riian Naude is favourite to retain his title but with brother Evan Naude, who was unable to compete last Sunday, and former pro cyclist Kris Hedges possible entries, the race for overall male honours could be very close.

With Karen Smith still recovering from her serious crash in the World Championships, Karen Bordage and Dee McMullen will most likely be in an equally close finish for overall female honours.

Ricky Sousa and Lyn Patchett, both of whom have produced outstanding performances in overseas duathlons over the past few years, will be firm favourites to take overall honours in the duathlon which is a new addition to the event this year.

Because of the postponement, entries for the races have reopened and entry forms can be obtained at www.bta.bm with entries closing on Friday. All new participants and all participants who have already entered and have not already collected their race package and numbers can do so on race day but are asked to arrive early.

All registered competitors who can no longer take part this Sunday should call race director Dave Morrison on 505-4895 for details on how to obtain a refund on the entry fee.

Local junior triathlete Coyatito Smith suffered disappointment on Saturday as he was unable to compete in a Sprint Triathlon in Costa Rica after his bike was lost in transit and still has not been recovered.

Smith was unable to borrow a bike in time and ended up having to watch the race, and was then unable to get out of El Salvador due to storm activity.
