Smith slips to second
Malcolm Smith slipped down to second place in the Pan-Am Games Sunfish standings when his fiercest rival struck two bullets yesterday.
Venezuelan Eduardo Cordero, Smith's number one adversary for many a regatta, took first place in both races off Club Nautico, Boca Chica.
Smith, who had been leading after an opening day second and third, had a second in the first race yesterday but could do no better than seventh in the final outing.
With eight races still to go he has plenty of time to make up the difference but at present he lies six points off the pace.
Smith's training partner, Martin Vezina, who is representing Canada in the same class, had a much better day, moving up to third spot after a sixth and a second place.
The Spanish Point Boat Club sailor has 19 points overall.
In the Laser class, Bermuda's Zander Kirkland put his bad opening day behind him to move up the standings.
Kirkland had finishes of 13th and 11th on Monday, but yesterday he scored a fifth in the opener and tenth in the second. Those results moved him up from 12th to ninth with 39 points.
