A waste of police resources
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my intense disappointment in seeing Bermuda police officers ticket cars parked along the road outside the Kappa tournament over the weekend. While I did not receive a ticket, I witnessed at least five officers issuing citations to scores of cars along Frog Lane on both Friday and Saturday. This is an outrageous use of public resources given the significant lack of parking that exists in the area around the National Sports Complex.
The Kappa Tournament is a great event that brings together Bermudians from all walks of life. All Bermudians should celebrate this event, yet it seems our police force would rather exploit the weekend to generate thousands of dollars in fines. Not only does this harm Bermudians financially but it is a gross misappropriation of police resources at a time when countless murders go unsolved on the island.
I fully support obeying the rules but it seems the police, who already selectively enforce other traffic laws, could choose to help parents and grandparents during one of the most prominent weekends of the year, rather than punishing them for being involved in their kids’ lives.
Next year, let’s hope the Governor and the Bermuda Police Service can put Bermudians first by showing some consideration and empathy for the taxpayers who pay their budgets.
