New faces for Intercontinental Cup squad
Almost half of Bermuda?s successful ICC Trophy squad will not compete in this month?s Intercontinental Cup in Canada.
School, work and other commitments have necessitated a number of changes in Gus Logie?s 14-member line-up scheduled to leave the Island on August 22 for three-day matches against the USA and the hosts.
?Some members of the ICC Trophy squad are unavailable for different reasons. One or two of the youngsters have to go back to school and some others are unavailable for other reasons so we?ll be looking at possibly drafting in five or six new players to supplement the squad,? revealed the national coach yesterday ahead of an impending announcement.
Despite the alterations in his personnel, Logie acknowledged it would be a chance to scrutinise new prospects which would hopefully benefit Bermuda in the future.
?As a coach you sometimes get attached to some players but the reality is that changes will be made from time to time ? sometimes forced changes in terms of injury or loss of form ? and you have to be very objective and give opportunities to other players to show what they are worth,? he said.
?It?s a good opportunity to blood a few young players.?
Asked if there were any players who had impressed him and that he would wish to take to Canada, he replied: ?Yes, there are one or two names but I wouldn?t want to disclose them yet as it?s a very sensitive issue.
?The selectors have met and have identified a few players who we?re quite pleased with and in the next few days we?re hoping to name those guys.?
The shift in focus from one-day to three-day cricket, Logie pointed out, should offer the Island?s cricketers a more relaxed atmosphere but equally solid competition.
?It?s not the hustle and bustle of the One-Day situation. It?s a matter of spending time at the crease .
?I think the two (formats) work together. As a player, I always found if I was in touch in the One-Day game, I would do better in the longer game,? said the coach.
?It helps in terms of your approach, attitude and confidence. Confidence is what it?s all about whether it?s one-day, three-day or five-day.
?The players are confident in their ability and it?s just a matter of making slight adjustments, knowing that it?s not a situation where it?s touch and go. They have time on their side and so the strategies will obviously be a little different in terms of how you plan for the three-day game.?
Players, he added, should be more comfortable knowing that if they fail in one innings ?they have the opportunity to come good in the next?.
?We?re hoping to see a disciplined approach to the batting and bowling . . . and we hope the players will continue to work as hard as they have been doing and show the level of performance that is expected of them in Canada.?
