Golden Fisher beats DeSilva
Unseeded Sasha Fisher shocked number two seed Zarah DeSilva in the Ladies A Singles in the Argus Open Tennis Tournament.
Fisher dominated the match against a somewhat uninspired DeSilva. The Fed Cup and Island Games team-mates were competitive during points but their long-term friendship was evident during the change-overs when they smiled and chatted like young school girls.
These exchanges did not make Fisher lose focus and she won fairly easily 6-1, 6-2. She now faces top seed Ashley Brooks in tomorrow?s final.
Meanwhile Brooks teamed up with Lavern Stowe in the ladies A Doubles and defeated the mother and daughter team of Deerfield Academy student Amanda Burns and Island Games volleyball competitor Kim Burns.
Stowe and Brooks won 6-2, 6-3 and are headed for a showdown in the finals against Kara and Sasha Fisher, who upset the number two seeds Gil Butterfield and Jill Finnigan.
David Jenkins and Roger Marshall defeated brothers Earl and Denton Leader 6-1, 6-4 in the men?s doubles. On serve, down 4-5, the Leaders had a chance to stay in the match and decide the second set in a tie-breaker. A double fault and then a sitter into the net helped Jenkins and Marshall break and then they served out the match.
Now in the finals, they wait for the outcome of the top half semi between Andy Bray and Brian Way against Jerome Bradshaw and David Thomas.
Ben Dier outlasted Paddy Cosgrove in another three-set match in the Mens B Singles. Earlier in the tournament Cosgrove upset second seed Jan Jarmula in a marathon match but this time Dier denied him the chance and took the match 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). Now Dier faces Ben Lau, who he defeated in a three-set match in the Men?s A.
Matches in the Argus Open continue this evening from 5 p.m. at the W.E.R. Joell Stadium.
