Maycock makes his mark

David Maycock lifted top honours as the American Airlines Bowling Spectacular approached its grand finale.

In last week's action, Maycock almost duplicated the outstanding performance of Carl Reid the previous week as he became the major prizewinner of the evening, dominating both the handicap and scratch divisions.

In the scratch division, he won the first game with a blistering 253 and then improved on that with a second game of 258.

However, his third of 223 failed to beat Casey Burgess who rolled a 247 game.

Maycock accumulated enough points to secure the top series prize with a 734 total. He was followed by Wayne Kelly with 664 and Reid with 646.

In the handicap division, Maycock finished with a 791 series and also won first and third high handicap games with 277 and 272 respectively. David Cann took second with 276.

Other series winners were Kenneth Simmons on 763, Kelly 733, Reid 724, Colbert Pearman 712, Joshua Bento 709, Marvin Harvey 706 and Kevin Swan 698.

For the 14th straight year, bowlers will abandon their normal routine on the lanes and convert their game to that of cricket in the annual Cup Match tournament tomorrow night and on Thursday.

The Bowlers' Cup Match involves the fans of the Somerset and St. George's cricket clubs. Dressed in colours that represent their favourite club, the participants will perform as a team in the atmosphere of calypso music and Cup Match food.

In determining the winning side, the average of all the bowlers on one side will be compared to the average of the bowlers on the other.

"Anyone who knows how to bowl can participate," said organiser Lionel Dowling. "Participation is not limited to the league bowlers or just the strong bowlers, but it is necessary that one has a clear understanding as to the general playing rules and procedures of the game".

Cup Match will be held at the Southside Family Bowl tomorrow and at Warwick Lanes on Thursday. Play will begin at 7.00.
