St.George's keep the title
Somerset CC 79
St.George's 80-4
St.George's Cricket Club successfully defended the Colts Cup Match trophy at Wellington Oval on Sunday, defeating Somerset Cricket Club by six wickets.
Despite a scheduling conflict which saw neighbouring St.David's host the Camel Cup Final across the harbour the same day, a considerable crowd was on hand to witness some of the Island's budding cricketers showcase their talents.
Batting first, Somerset were up against it from the off, losing their very first wicket without any runs on the board when Lauren Marshall shattered Eugene Johnston's stumps.
Derek Hill (15) and Somerset's top scorer Scofield Robinson (21) then set about the task of repairing the damage, adding 25 for the second wicket before Jason Lowe had the latter caught and bowled. One run later, Hill was bowled by Stefan Kelly.
Robinson cracked three fours and one six in just 32 minutes at the crease, while Hill had two sixes off 50 balls.
Determined not to loosen their grip on the match, St.George's spinner Rodney Trott further compounded Somerset's woes, picking up the prized scalps of both Darren Richardson (one) and Jacobi Robinson without scoring.
But Bergon Spencer (11) and Somerset skipper Shane Hollis (four) added a measure of stability to the innings with another useful 25 for the sixth wicket before Kelly had Spencer bowled.
And seven runs later, Hollis was also on his way back to the pavilion, courtesy of a fine catch by Allan Douglas II off Kelly.
Malachi Jones (seven) tried desperately to fend off St.George's attack, but he kept running out of partners at the other end as Kelly, Trott and Lauren Marshall relentlessly continued to rip through Somerset's lower order, completing their task in just 23.3 overs.
Somerset's last five wickets fell for 21 runs, while their opponents managed to get the job done using only four bowlers.
Both Trott and Kelly led St.George's bowling, with three for 20 and three for 27.
Trott also tossed down five maidens, while Marshall had an equally impressive two for 19 off just 4.3 overs and Jason Lowe one for ten off six overs.
In pursuit of their opponents low total, St.George's lost four wickets along the way with Hill and Jacobi Robinson responsible for the first three wickets to fall.
Hill sent Kevon Foggo (eight) back to the pavilion, while Robinson seized the prized scalps of both Detroy Smith (12) and Mischel Paynter (nought).
Freddie Hall Jr. (13) would be the last St.George's wicket to fall after Spencer had him bowled.
Orande Bascome led St.George's batting with a fine knock of 28 which also contained two fours, while Trott (ten not out) accompanied him at the crease when the winning runs were scored.
Jacobi Robinson was the pick of Somerset's bowling with two for 14 off nine overs which included four maidens, while Hill (one for eight) and Spencer (one for nine) were the only other successful bowlers.
In all, Somerset used eight bowlers in a vain attempt to defend their low score with their hosts achieving their winning objective in 24.4 overs.
St.David's 174 Bailey's Bay 59
St.David's handed holders Bailey's Bat a whopping 115 run defeat to dethrone the champions at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday during the first round of the Junior Eastern Counties.
Just a week after suffering a crushing loss to Bay in the Under 15 Parish League, St.David's simply returned the favour, and did it when it mattered the most.
Jahson Smith led the Islanders batting with a top knock of 47 while Justin Pitcher followed this up with a useful 23.
Rodney Trott and Kearon Trott were the pick of Bay's bowlers, with three for 36 and three for 22 respectively.
In reply, Bay's innings just never got going, with wickets falling rapidly and often. Tywaun Burgess led his team in the batting department with 15 while Dion Ball scored 14.
Lauren Marshall was unplayable, bagging an astounding four wickets for a stingy eight runs, followed by Dominic Peace who took three for ten and Smith - capping of a fine all round performance - grabbing two for one off just five deliveries.
