Victory for Bermuda?s youth
Malachi Jones scored 60 and offspinner Tamory Tucker took four for 26 as Bermuda?s under-19 cricketers beat the Barbados Junior School by 33 runs in the Sir Garfield Sobers junior tournament yesterday.
Batting first in Barbados, and despite losing opener Oronde Bascome early on, Bermuda advanced to a commanding 100 for one, with Rodney Trott (33) and Chris Douglas (16) putting on 62 for the second wicket.
But Bermuda?s soft underbelly of a middle order was exposed once they were out, and the final total of 204 had more to do with the calm head of Jones, who was only dismissed in the final over, not to mention the waywardness of the Barbados Junior School bowlers, who produced an incredible 30 wides in only 39.5 overs.
To add insult to injury, they were only given 38 overs in which to chase the target having been penalised for a painfully slow over rate when they bowled.
And the task of chasing over 200 proved beyond them, as Cleveland?s Tucker, Tre Govia (one for 31), Jones (two for 30), and Kyle Hodsoll (one for 20) succeeded in dismissing their hosts for only 171.
Under 19 coach Andre Manders said last night he was pleased with Bermuda?s first win of the nine-game tournament, but insisted they should have scored over 250.
?When we were 100 for one, we were looking in great shape ? but we lost too many easy wickets after that,? he said.
?These guys were probably one of the weaker teams were are going to play and it will be important if we bat first against some of the stronger sides to post a higher total.
?We bowled very well though and kept what I thought was a good batting side quiet. We?ve got a lot of cricket coming up over the course of the next two weeks and it will be a great opportunity for the boys to learn and develop.?
Bermuda have a rest day today before taking on a side from Toronto tomorrow.
