Augustus takes the prize

Teenager Daniel Augustus clung on to his overnight four-shot lead at the Ross (Blackie) Talbot Junior International Classic at Tucker?s Point on Saturday to claim the inaugural event?s senior division.

Augustus, who led the 54-hole tournament throughout, had to fight off a spirited challenge from 20-year-old Jarryd Dillas, who got to within a shot as the front nine drew to a close.

But Augustus, who ultimately delivered on his pledge the day before to shoot a par 70 in the final round ? holed a crucial four-foot putt on the ninth to retain his one-shot lead ? while his superior consistency on the back nine proved too hot to handle for Dillas, who?s three bogeys and no birdies forced him to settle for second place.

Augustus finished seven-over for the tournament, Dillas 11-over ? with third placed Camiko Smith coming in well behind on 19-over.

?I said I had to go out and shoot par and I did,? said an ecstatic winner afterwards.

?It was definitely one of the best results I?ve ever had because I kept it together and played just how I wanted. Jarryd really came out firing as I expected him to, but I concentrated on my own game and tried not to worry too much about anybody else.

?Mentally that is the best I have ever felt on the golf course and to win having lead the tournament all the way through is very pleasing.?

The 18-year-old will now spend the rest of the summer working at Riddell?s Bay before heading off to Division One golf college Bethune-Cookeman in Florida this September.

Meanwhile, in the 15-17 age group division, Texan John Burch triumphed by three shots over fellow American James Smith ? despite shooting a six-over par 76 in the final round.

Burch finished 14-over for the tournament, some six shots ahead of the third placed finisher Bradford Jones from Knoxville, Tennessee.

In a division where the local golfers failed to impose themselves all week, the best-placed Bermudian was Mark Phillips on 22-over par.

There was an exciting finish in the Boys 12-14 division as two locals, Alex Osborne and Joshua Cabrera (17-over) ? were forced into a play-off ? with the former holding his nerve on the second play-off hole to claim the title.

Finally, the only two girls in the competition finished some 15 shots apart, as American Megan Jones took the plaudits with a three-round score of 21-over, with compatriot Kaylin Terry (plus 36) left trailing in her wake.
