Social victory
Wayward bowling by veteran Phillip Burgess enabled Premier Division league contenders Social Club to edge out Flatts by a single wicket at Devonshire Rec. yesterday.
Burgess? sloppiness saw him bowl four wides and a leg bye at a time when the game hung in the balance with Social Club requiring five runs to win but with just two wickets to fall.
Although Burgess managed to get the wicket of Jeffrey Tyrrell he didn?t seem to be in the mood for any further wickets, however, and much to the delight of Social Club his stream of extras with the last pair at the wicket saw the home team sail to victory.
Chasing a victory target of 214, Charlie Marshall led Social Club with a sterling 69 with four sixes and seven fours. The player-coach and Nakia Smith added much needed stability for the sixth wicket, taking the score from five for 104 to 182 and within sight of victory.
When Marshall was out at 182, Smith was forced to play the dominant role and his undefeated 47 proved to be vital with batsmen at the opposite end unable to weather the inspired Flatts attack.
With a variety of strokes, Smith steadied the batting and helped steered Social to victory, hitting four sixes and two fours. Also among the runs were Jamiko Marshall on 23 and Winston Simmons on 17.
Veteran Gary Brangman was top bowler for Flatts with three for 20 from ten overs and four maidens while Vernon Eve took two for 54 from ten overs.
Earlier Nelson Bascome jr struck 59 and Gary Brangman hit 57 to lead Flatts to their respectable total. Rahji Edness was also helpful with the bat, adding 41.
Kani Darrell was the pick of the Social bowlers with three for 45 from ten overs while Kenny Phillips claimed two for 24 from 4.1 overs and Charlie Marshall snatched two for 27 from eight overs.
