Augustus surges into four-shot lead
Daniel Augustus surged into a commanding four-shot lead in the senior division of the Ross (Blackie) Talbot Junior International Classic at Tucker?s Point yesterday.
The 18-year-old, who was unable to swing a golf club for seven months starting late last year because of a stubborn wrist injury, carded a three-over-par 73 to go with his first round 74, leaving him seven over for the tournament.
Another Bermudian, Jarryd Dillas, is in second on ten over having put together two rounds of 77 and 73, while Camiko Smith is two shots further back in third.
Though happy to be leading the inaugural event, Augustus said afterwards he was not all that pleased with the way he has been playing and will aim to shoot par in today?s final round to keep his nearest rivals at arm?s length.
?I actually felt like I played worse than I did in the first round but somehow came through with a better score,? said Augustus, who is heading to US Division One golf college Bethune-Cookeman in Florida this September.
?The conditions have definitely not been easy ? there?s quite a bit of wind around and the greens have a been a little on the slow side.
?But I know I?m in a very strong position and I?m going to be quite conservative in the final round and see if I can get round in par. If I do that, somebody is going to have to shoot four under or better, which I?m not saying is impossible, but nobody has got close to that yet and somebody is going to have to produce something incredible in order to do it.
?But I?m really excited to be leading the tournament and hopefully if I keep going the way I?m going, then I should win.?
Meanwhile in the Boy?s 15-17 division, Texan John Burch shot 72 ? the low round of the day ? to move from second to first on eight over ? five shots ahead of another American, James Smith, who finished with a 75 yesterday.
Bermudian Cornell Bean (15 over) is in third while first round leader Adam Lewicki from Connecticut endured a disastrous day, slipping to eighth overall following a second round 86.
Two Bermudians head the Boys 12-14 division, with Alex Osborne (11 over) leading Joshua Cabrera (14 over) by three shots while in the two-person Girls division, American Megan Jones leads on 20 over par from compatriot Kaylin Terry (33 over).
