Goater 'going nowhere'
Bermuda's Shaun Goater will continue being one of the “Maine” men despite Nicolas Anelka's move to Manchester City.
Manager Kevin Keegan confirmed yesterday he had no intentions of disposing of any of his other strikers though signing the Frenchman from Paris St. Germain in a deal reported to be worth ?12 million ($17.5 million). In exchange, City's Alain Toure has moved to PSG.
Rumours had been rife for the past two weeks that 32-year-old Goater might be let go by newly-promoted City who are looking to make an impact on the Premiership. However, Keegan dispelled suggestions that he might be looking to offload any of his strike force which includes Goater, Paulo Wanchope, Darren Huckerby and Jon Macken.
He did acknowledge that Anelka, 23, and Argentine striker, Vicente Vuouso, who has also completed his move to City, will add “a new dimension” to the team. Keegan was candid as he also stated Anelka would be his first-choice forward in City's return to the top flight of English football.
“We have made a number of signings this summer but (Sylvain) Distin and Anelka are the two I am really excited about. Anelka is still only 23, people seem to forget that, and he's got a lot to offer us,” said the manager, regarding the newest face at Maine Road.
Anelka won the double with Arsenal in 1998 before falling out with that club and moving to Real Madrid. He failed to fit in with the Spanish side and went to PSG in 2000. PSG loaned him to Liverpool last December. He played well and, while Liverpool had an option to make Anelka a permanent signing, they decided not to offer him a contract.
