Hayward sets up easy Stars win

A devastating spell of medium-pace bowling by teenager Anthony Hayward ripped apart Cleveland and set up an easy Western Stars victory on Saturday.

Playing on his home ground at St. John?s Road, the 16-year-old returned match figures of six for 21 in 9.4 overs with four maidens as he gutted the visitors? middle order before cleaning up the tail also.

Cleveland, who had gotten the better of Stars in recent times, were routed for 66 in 32.4 overs and were never allowed to get into the game as Stars replied with a brisk 70 in just 11.5 overs. The winners lost four wickets in their run chase; veteran captain Albert Steede remaining unbeaten on 22 (three fours, one six). Opener Jermaine Postlethwaite contributed 16 (two fours, one six).

However, the player of the day was young Hayward who counted Cleveland?s stand-in captain Jason Simons and the attacking Curtis Jackson among his victims ? both without troubling the scorers ? and also shone in the field with two catches. Dennis Archer, Justin Robinson and Roshon Pereira supported the Berkeley student?s performance with a wicket apiece while the other batsman perished via the run-out route.

Peter Philpott, who gathered ten runs, was the lone Cleveland batsman to attain double digits as they crumbled steadily after losing their first wicket with just six runs on the board.

Cleveland bowler Jeff Tyrell managed three wickets for 40 runs in Stars? reply but his effort was hardly enough to prevent a foregone conclusion.
