Deadline extended for Hall of Fame

The subject of just who should be inaugurated into Bermuda's sporting Hall of Fame is obviously the topic of much debate in households across the Island.

Rick Richardson, chairman of the Hall of Fame board, said, despite the closing date for nominations being yesterday, a large number of people had contacted him requesting more time.

As a result the deadline for suggestions has been extended until February 28.

"All of the forms have been picked up from the various outlets and people have just asked for more time to get them in," said Richardson last night.

He said it was not that there had not been enough entries, quite the opposite.

"In the first day it went out we had 96 nominations returned to the Department of Youth and Sport alone," he said.

"We are now being overwhelmed by the number of nominations but tonnes of people have called and said 'give us more time to get them in'."

Richardson said a stipulation on the entry was causing a headache for some people.

"We had on the form 'give your nomination and also state in 100 words or less some of the information on these folks'," he said. "Some people were really stymied by that and we basically said 'write a few words if you wish, or less, and just get the forms back in'.

"A great number of people are involved right now and they are really thinking about it."

Richardson said it was important to keep to the February 28 deadline so that the board would have ample time to deliberate.

"We are not under a gun but it gives us enough time to start the research, check newspaper archives and get more information and background on the people," he said.

Forms are still available for collection and when completed should be taken to either Market Place stores, Shell Service Stations at Boaz Island, Warwick, East Broadway and the Causeway or Esso stations at St. George's, St. David's and City Tigermarket.
