FA to investigate Lightbourne incident

Kyle Lightbourne could face an English Football Association rap after a report of an alleged incident at the end of Saturday's Third Division soccer clash between Macclesfield and Exeter was submitted to authorities.

The Bermudian striker was involved in an altercation with a fan after his side Macclesfield conceded a 94th minute equaliser against The Grecians.

As the players were leaving the pitch a fan is said to have shouted something towards Lightbourne who, under the apparent provocation, reacted.

The Macclesfield Express newspaper reported yesterday that Lightbourne made an unsuccessful bid to climb into the main stand before being ushered away to the dressing room.

Referee Mike Pike made note of the incident and yesterday the Football Association in London confirmed they had received his report.

"It has been referred to us and we are in communication with both clubs to ascertain their observations on it," a spokesman told The Royal Gazette.

Macclesfield's chief executive Colin Garlick said: "An incident has been reported to the FA that was initially picked up by an assessor.

"He in turn spoke to the referee and he has put it into his report. It's now up to the FA to decide whether or not to act.

"If a charge is to be brought against Kyle, he would then have 14 days in which to appeal."

Macclesfield spokesman Tom Rance added that Lightbourne had consistently been one of the club's best players this season and said: "It's a shame that something like this has happened."

The incident also came as a shock to Lightbourne's manager Dave Moss.

"I've not heard anything about the incident since, but I do know everybody was very high on emotion after their late equaliser, including Kyle," he said.

"Players do react to situations sometimes, but I'm surprised at Kyle. He has always struck me as a very placid lad off the park."

The player himself was not available for comment when contacted yesterday evening.

Shaun Goater was relegated to the Manchester City bench last night for the Premiership clash with Fulham at Maine Road.

Goater had suffered a slight injury to his groin during training on Tuesday andwas brought on for Nicolas Anelka for the final five minutes of the 4-1 victory over the Cottagers.
