Goater's game to forget
Shaun Goater's 400th league appearance will not be one that lives long in the memory - the Bermudian having an afternoon to forget on Saturday as Manchester City slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle.
City got off to the worst possible start, conceding a goal to Newcastle captain Alan Shearer after just ten seconds - the joint fastest ever goal in the Premiership.
And they conceded a second shortly after City manager Kevin Keegan replaced Goater in the 60th minute with Jon Macken - Craig Bellamy slotting home to finish off the Blues.
Goater had two opportunities in the game, the first coming in the opening minutes but he reacted too slowly to a ball into the box and allowed `keeper Shay Given to smother.
In the second half he forced another save out of Given after the Marc Vivien Foe completely missed his shot and the ball fell to Goater on the edge of the box.
In Division Three in England, Kyle Lightbourne and Macclesfield Town threw away a two-goal first-half lead against Bournemouth to draw 2-2.
Lightbourne, who has seen boss Dave Moss bring in a number of new players this week, was one of four players singled out for praise.
"Neil Ross came off the bench and did well," said Moss. "I left him there because (Matthew) Tipton, Lightbourne and (Lee) Hardy have all done well for me and all deserved to keep their shirts."
