Impaired drivers taken off the road
Several cases of impaired driving were dealt with in Magistrates? Court on Thursday ? the majority of which involved accidents.
Scott Cabral, 20, from St. David?s Road, St. George?s, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired on June 24.
Crown counsel Shakira Dill told the court that Police responded to reports of an accident on North Shore Road at about 2.21 a.m.
She said when officers arrived on the scene they found Cabral standing on the side of the road near his vehicle.
Ms Dill said Cabral?s speech was slurred, his eyes were glazed and he smelt of intoxicants.
Cabral told Police he had been working in the Bermuda Regiment?s mess hall serving drinks and had had a few.
She said a breathalyser test revealed 160mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood ? twice the legal limit.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Cabral $1,000 and disqualified him from all vehicles for 12 months.
Charles Cross, 30, from Beacon Hill in Sandys also pleaded guilty to driving while impaired.
Ms Dill told the court that Police responded to a hit and run collision on Church Street on June 14 at about 9.45 p.m.
She said eyewitnesses at the scene told Police a jeep had skipped a red light and caused the collision.
Police caught up with Cross along Middle Road as he was attempting to park the car, which had extensive damage to the front.
She said Cross stumbled from the car and told Police he ?felt bad about how alcohol got to him.?
The results of his breathalyser test were not revealed in court.
He was fined $1,000 and disqualified from all vehicles for 12 months.
Dwayne Reid from Broome Street, Sandys pleaded guilty to driving while impaired on June 22.
Ms Dill said Police attended the scene of an accident on Cockburn Road in Sandys at about 2.24 a.m. and found Reid near his car which had collided with a utility pole.
She said he appeared unsteady on his feet and was arrested.
A breathalyser test revealed 124mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
He was fined $1,000 and disqualified for 12 months.
Reid asked for time to pay the fine and Mr. Tokunbo gave him until August 12 to pay, or 100 days default.
Winston Scott, 51, from Cedar Park Road, Devonshire also pleaded guilty to driving while impaired on June 19.
Ms Dill told the court that at about 11.26 p.m. Police saw Scott ignore a traffic sign along Middle Road in Southampton and pulled him over.
She said Scott told Police the reason he did not stop was because there was no traffic coming, but officers noticed he was unsteady on his feet.
A breathalyser test revealed 184 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
He was also fined $1,000 and disqualified from all vehicles for 12 months.
