Raising awareness about violence against women

In order to bring more attention to violence against women the Women's Resource Centre is holding its second Take Back the Night Awareness Walk on Wednesday.

Take Back the Night began in Germany in 1973 in response to a series of sexual assaults rapes and murders that were happening to women across the country.

It is an international event that takes place throughout the year with many communities across the world using it as a fundraiser or response to incidents in their area. The aim is to shed light on the sexual, physical and emotional violence women endure every day. Another goal is the empower women to take a stand and speak out against violence that is being perpetuated against them.

A spokeswoman for the group said it was important that women felt safe and free in their community. She added that the Take Back the Night website reports that 42 percent of women over the age of 15 reported that they felt unsafe walking alone in their neighbourhood at night. When asked the same question only ten percent of men said they felt unsafe. The poll also indicated that over a third of women feel unsafe when home along.

The Women's Resource Centre is a charity that aims at reducing sexual and domestic violence and the adverse effects that come with the violence. The charity has been instrumental in ensuring victims of domestic violence are protected through the courts and provides counselling services, as well as other programs.

Take Back the Night in Bermuda takes place on Wednesday and the walk begins at 7 p.m. sharp. Registration for the walk begins at 5.30 p.m. at Albuoy's Point. The registration fee, which is $20, will go to the WRC and its various programmes. Pledge forms are available from Sportseller in the Washington Mall or attached . For more information call the WRC.
