Beating victim told: We will bring your attackers to justice

Police Commissioner George Jackson has assured beating victim Rui Medeiros that he is determined to see his attackers caught and brought to justice.

Bermuda?s top cop met Mr. Medeiros on Monday night, it emerged yesterday.

And Mr. Medeiros told that during that meeting Mr. Jackson pledged to ?get to the bottom? of the case.

The attack victim has been critical of the Police response to the attack outside Docksiders, which happened after a World Cup football match.

But last night the 31-year-old said that the meeting with Commissioner had assured him that the force was taking the investigation seriously.

?This gives me more confidence,? said Mr. Medeiros, who came to Bermuda from the Azores with his family when he was five.

He added: ?The Police said they are going to get serious and really stop these guys from doing this stuff.?

Mr. Medeiros, who says he has given officers the names of two of the four men he said assaulted him, said there could be arrests in the case in the next few days.

He said he was attacked by four black men. Witnesses have said racial insults were thrown at him after a Portuguese flag was burnt in the bar.

Meanwhile, the Portugal football fan said the injuries he received outside Docksiders were healing well.

An eye specialist has said that he will get full 20/20 vision back in his right eye, he confirmed.

And Mr. Medeiros said Dr. Christopher Johnson, the plastic surgeon who operated on him in the wake of the beating, had expressed surprise at how quickly his face was healing.

The Police Commissioner revealed details of the meeting with Mr. Medeiros at a press conference yesterday when quizzed by reporters about the problems officers face when witnesses refuse to give information about crimes.

Referring to the Medeiros case, he said it was still under investigation and added that the victim was due to give Police more information this week.
