Police officer pleads not guilty to assault charge

One of six Police officers accused of assaulting former Dunkley?s Dairy employees convicted last month on charges of importing the cannabis, appeared briefly in Plea Court yesterday.

Det. Con. Kirly Mitchell pleaded not guilty to the charge of assaulting Michael Madeiros causing bodily harm, while was in custody on suspicion of of conspiring to import $2 million worth of cannabis.understands that other Police officers likely to charged with assault are Det. Con. lan Miguel, Det. Con. David Bhagwam, Det. Con. Jameiko Tucker, Det. Con. Antoine Fox and Det. Con. Andrew Woolridge.

Madeiros, 41, along with Maurice Stovell and Stephen Flood, were allegedly subjected to severe beatings, threats and false promises while in Police custody in October, 2003.

Madeiros and Flood were later convicted and are awaiting sentencing.

Mr. Stovell was released halfway through the trial after Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves ruled he had no case to answer.

Mitchell will appear in Plea Court on April 6 for further mention.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman could not say yesterday when the other five Police officers were due to appear in court, but confirmed that the six would be charged together.
