Many Martial Arts medals for Bermuda team

The Bermuda Kung Fu / Wushu Association team returned home recently with 21 medals ? nine golds, six silvers and six bronzes ? after an outstanding performance at the 2005 Taiji Legacy International Martial Arts Championships in Dallas, Texas.

Tai Chi competitor Celia Tuzo led the team, winning seven medals: gold in Yang Taiji, Sun Taiji and Internal Other Form, silver in Yang Sabre (Broadsword), Open Short Weapon and Internal Other Weapon and bronze in Yang Straightsword.

Garon Wilkinson won four medals with a gold in Open Flexile Weapons, silver in Traditional Staff and Traditional Spear and bronze in Traditional Other Form.

Paul Astwood secured a hat-trick of gold medals with victories in the Executive Northern Traditional Form, Traditional Other Form and Traditional Staff.

The junior starred also with Kaelin Cox claiming gold in 8-11 Light Weight Point Sparring, silver in Traditional Northern Forms and bronze in Traditional Staff.

Antonio Perinchief-Leader won gold in 8-11 Point Sparring while Donniesha Gardner collected bronze in teens Traditional Other Form and Tonae Perinchief-Leader bronze in Teen Traditional Other Weapon. Zain Allan Philpott also took bronze in 8-11 Point Sparring.

Kent Bean and Marshall Stoneham also had excellent performances and as a result of the tight competition only fractions of a point kept them from collecting medals in their respective divisions.

Damion Wilson competed for the first time in the advanced men?s Continuous Sparring and held his after own stepping up from the intermediate ranks.

?This overseas tournament was a first for many junior competitors and was truly an eye opener for all of us into the present state of Chinese Martial Arts.

?It gave team members a chance to see how they measured up internationally with others of similar experience, especially with Kung Fu/Wushu being introduced to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing,? said senior team member Garon Wilkinson, thanking their sponsors.

?We are totally psyched for the next competition and will push towards representation in Beijing.?

The Bermuda Kung Fu group can be seen on Saturday at the Bermuda Karate Institute?s 35th Anniversary Demonstration at City Hall from 7 p.m.
