To call this FA Cup first round clash a mismatch would be something of an understatement as Somerset Eagles ran rampant to record an emphatic 10-0 thrashing over Vasco Mariners at White Hill Field yesterday.

Mariners' slim hopes of an upset received a sharp jolt as early as the ninth minute when Rodre (Piper) Wilson hammered the ball home from the edge of the 18 yard box.

Twelve minutes later Lamaul Crofton doubled the home team's lead when he capitalised on a Nakia Smith through ball by rounding Mariners' ‘keeper Stephen Ambrosio and slotting into an empty net.

Shortly after Eagles striker Darren Dowling made it 3-0 when he rose to head home an Adolphus Lambert cross from the left and then helped himself to a second two minutes before the interval after Wilson had opened a gaping hole in the Mariners' defence with a dazzling run down the the left side.

Dowling narrowly missed his hat-trick when a shot from eight yards rolled harmlessly wide.

Further underlining Eagles superiority during the opening half was the fact that Mariners couldn't muster a single shot on goal and they had to wait until the 61st minute for second-half substitute Scott Henderson to fire in what proved to be their only attempt at goal.

Eagles ‘keeper Adrian Burrows only got into the action when he stepped up to convert his team's fifth goal via the penalty spot.

Sean Dill then made it 6-0 from close range before Lambert finally received reward for yet another outstanding performance by notching Eagles seventh.

Dill then grabbed a second in the 73rd minute, Stevie Dread side-footed home a Musceo Hunt free kick ten minutes later and Jelani (Roots) Butterfield ended Mariners' misery when he rifled home Eagles tenth and final goal.

Lobster Pot 3 (aet)

Never-say-die Lobster Pot breathed life into their FA Cup challenge with five minutes to spare at St. John's Field yesterday.

Three times Pot went behind and three times they came back, two-goal hero Jeremy Leese swinging a boot at the ball from six yards out after Rangers failed to clear a lofted left wing cross deep into extra-time.

In a scrappy game played at a largely pedestrian pace, it was Rangers who opened the scoring against the run of play, Tillman Darrell exacting the punishment after Pot ‘keeper Brian Ward was unable to hang onto Arnold Todd's shot on 22 minutes.

Leese brought the teams back on level terms 12 minutes later when his shot crept over the line despite Berwin Thomas in the Rangers goal getting a hand to it.

With no further goals after 90 minutes, the teams went into extra-time and once again it was Rangers who took the early initiative.

With 94 minutes on the clock Clevelyn Crichlow sent Wayne Augustus clear and he swept the ball home to seemingly send the tie heading the way of West.

But six minutes later Pot replied through Dave Allison, though ‘keeper Thomas should take credit for the assist. Having made a hash of a high pass into the box, Thomas laid the chance on a plate for Allison who managed to get the ball over the line despite scuffing his close-range shot.

Pot's hard work was undone again though when Burton Cox put Rangers 3-2 up with the clock running down.

But Leese was not about to throw in the towel and he gave his side another crack at their Commercial Division rivals when he made the most of a left wing cross to seal the comeback.
