Island must do better on public transport

A reader suggests some solutions for bus cancellations

Dear Sir,

The ferry problems received good coverage today (April 18). And a petition signed by 800 people is ignored, or dismissed. However, pray explain the correlation between going for medical treatment in the US, paid for (including airfares) by individuals and insurance, and the savings on cancelling ferry routes? Perhaps the Government can verify the amount of monetary savings for fuel in ferry cancellations as the staff will still be paid.

Regarding buses, every day we hear of bus cancellations which negatively impact locals trying to go about their daily schooling and business. Yet we have a dedicated bus route for Grotto Bay! Why? Do tourists really want to go to Hamilton at 7.30am, 8am, 8.30am, 9am, etc? Where are they going that early in the morning? Nothing is open! Do tourists really want to get moving so early? And they have to be fully mobile as they can't board the bus in the hotel driveway but have to walk out to the road?

We have an excellent bus service out of St George’s. Why can't visitors use this? They board at the same bus stop. The only positive in the whole Grotto Bay timetable (18 buses per day to Hamilton) is that the early bus out of Hamilton hopefully assists people who work at the hotel. Later in the morning two buses leave Grotto Bay but are not supported by a schedule from Hamilton. Do they come up empty?

We must do better. Listen to your people, please ... for a better Bermuda.
