Appleby lauded in Chambers’ 2022 guide

Lawyers from Appleby’s Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Jersey private client and trusts practices have received high rankings in the recently released 2022 High Net Worth Guide by Chambers Global.

Sources highlighted the firm’s abilities to deal with complex work, citing them as leaders in cutting-edge and sophisticated estate planning.

Partner and group head in Bermuda, Vanessa Schrum received the highest Band 1 ranking.

The firm highlighted that Chambers quoted a source: “Vanessa is amazing and has got a great client following. I like her a lot. I really respect Vanessa as a trust lawyer.”

Another interviewee surveyed stated: “Vanessa is a pleasure to deal with, always so responsive and clear in comments and answers.”

Also mentioned from the Bermuda office was Bermuda Senior Associate Caljonah Smith who was listed as an “associate to watch”.

Caljonah handles advisory trusts matters, including trust formation and restructuring, and estate work.

The firm said that Cayman partner and practice group head, Carlos de Serpa Pimentel, had also achieved the highest Band 1 ranking.

Appleby said a commentator noted that he was "the true doyen of Cayman private client disputes litigators, and is generally the go-to person when London solicitors need local representation".

He has extensive experience in offshore private client matters and handles non-contentious matters as well as disputes, the firm said.

Another Appleby lawyer recognised in the rankings is Jersey Partner Fraser Robertson, who has considerable experience representing high-net-worth individuals and corporate trustees.

Cayman Counsel Esmond Brown was also listed as “up and coming”.

In the guide, Appleby is praised for its excellent service levels and for being responsive and helpful.

Carlos de Serpa Pimentel commented: “We are very proud of the prominent position our firm has in the private client and trusts arena and both our firm and individual rankings reflect this.

“The glowing client testimonials are again this year a great recognition of our excellent working relationships with our clients who we value highly and the quality of the collaborative work done by our lawyers.”
