A man has admitted damaging property at Hamilton Police Station over the weekend.

Christian Sousa-Matias, 22, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith said Sousa-Matias was being held at the police station in connection with unpaid fines.

Officers searched him in his holding cell and discovered a metal object in his hand which turned out to be the cover to a light switch which Sousa-Matias had removed from the shower room.

He also damaged and removed some of the stuffing from a station blanket. The total cost of the damages in unknown, but was less than $60.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered that court services conduct a social inquiry report for Sousa-Matias and adjourned the case to December 28 for sentencing.
