Driver elbowed police officer in face

A man who assaulted a police officer at the end of a high-speed car chase through three parishes was yesterday fined and ordered to attend Mental Health Court.Lincoln Smith, 28, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to assault on the officer, dangerous driving, failure to stop for police, driving without a licence and driving an unlicensed car.The court heard that Smith was stopped by police on October 25 after officers noticed that his vehicle registration had expired.Smith admitted during the stop that he did not have his driver’s licence and he was ticketed for the two offences.Officers later saw him driving the same car in Paget and ordered him to pull into the Paget Plaza car park.Police noticed three other men in the vehicle during the traffic stop.One of the men attempted to exit the car but was stopped from doing so.Smith then started the vehicle and accelerated westward out of the car park and on to South Road.Police pursued the vehicle along Middle Road through Paget and Warwick.Karen King-Deane, for the Crown, said that the car overtook other vehicles during the chase, which forced other road users to take evasive action to avoid a collision.The pursuit ended in the Whale Bay Road area of Southampton when Smith and two other passengers stopped and ran from the car.An officer attempted to arrest Smith but was elbowed in the face during the struggle.Another officer tasered Smith and the pair arrested him.Smith told officers afterwards: “I was just trying to get away.” Paul Wilson, for the defence, said that Smith had psychological problems and asked for him to be sent to Mental Health Court.Magistrate Tyrone Chin ordered Smith to attend Mental Health Court yesterday afternoon.He also fined Smith, from Pembroke, $2,400 for the traffic offences.• It is The Royal Gazette’s policy not to allow comments on stories regarding court cases.
