Gombey dancers performed a colourful display of togetherness at the weekend after a recent fracas between two troupes.

The Gombey unity link-up began at Bull’s Head Car Park in Hamilton and six troupes danced in Court Street on Saturday evening as they put on a show of solidarity.

The event came in the wake of trouble between some dancers at the beginning of the year.

That incident led to Bermuda’s Gombey community renewing a pledge to the island to honour its values.

Images of Gombey dancers clashing were widely circulated on social media at the start of January.

The situation led to a statement from Gombey leaders condemning the antisocial behaviour.

Social-media clips of the incident showed two Gombey youths clashing when dancing aggressively against each other.

Although that confrontation was quickly broken up, another incident caught on camera showed adult Gombeys confronting each other in the wake of impromptu “clashes” – when one troupe competes against the other.

At the time, Bermuda Gombey Council members said that the impacted troupes had “internally dealt with those that escalated tensions” and that new policies aimed at “deterring antisocial behaviour” had been created in the wake of the incident.
