Drugs fuelled crime spree
A 22-year-old man who went on a “drug-fuelled” crime spree was sentenced to drug court when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.
Steven O’Neill, of Berkeley Road, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to 15 counts of different offences, which included theft, forgery, uttering offensive words, deception, attempted deception, burglary, trespassing and attempted burglary.
O’Neill, who was remanded in custody for drug treatment court, is a self-confessed heroin addict who has a record of similar offences spanning 13 years.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: “The offences you committed are extensive. In the statement you said you wanted to make restitution, but it’s one thing to day and another to do.
“I will give you a shot at drug court, but if you get admitted to a programme and get expelled because you don’t make it, you’ll get big time.”
The court had heard at 1p.m. on Friday, February 23, a complainant parked his motorcycle in Reid Street and left his cheque book and rain coat under the seat.
When he returned to the bike at 4.20 p.m. he found the contents of his motorbike gone and later in the day noticed $1,200 and $1,400 removed from his account.
Footage from the Rosebank branch of the Bank of Butterfield saw O’Neill deposit the two cheques at 2.40 p.m. and 2.57 p.m. to two different bank clerks.
In a similar incident, on February 26, Valerie Rich left her rain suit worth $350 in the back of her bike, which was parked in Miles Market. When she returned later in the day the suit was gone. O’Neill also broke into the offices of Financial Assistance at Global House between the hours of 6.15 p.m. on March 1 and 8 a.m. on March 2 causing $3,500 worth of damage.
The 22 year-old was finally arrested at 6 a.m. on March 10 on suspicion of burglary and trespassing after trying to entering a room of Pompano Beach Club the day before.
In an interview at the Police Station he admitted to all 15 offences.
O’Neill is remanded in custody until May 16 when he will appear in drug treatment court.
