Burch cool and calm before the storm

Bermuda swimmer Roy-Allan Burch admits he is a lot calmer than he expected to be on the eve of his 50 metre freestyle qualifiers at London 2012.But he knows the nerves will be jangling and stomach churning tomorrow morning when he takes to the new track-style starting blocks, which are making their Olympic debut at these Games.Burch cut a relaxed figure yesterday, sitting on the couch watching TV coverage of the three-day evening from Team Bermuda’s townhouse, tucked away inside the sprawling Olympic Village. After all, he has a plan and is confident of executing it.“I’m just trying to relax mostly; it’s my second time at the Olympics and I’m trying not to get overexcited before I have to go,” said Burch, who is the fastest qualifier in his heat.“I’ve been a lot calmer than I thought I would be, especially as I’m just two days out before I compete.“I’m pretty excited and I just need to execute and do what I’m trained to do. Right now it feels like a regular meet but I guess I will get a little more revved up when I’m in the call room or right behind the blocks.”Burch’s mission is to reach his event’s semi-finals, no easy task considering he doesn’t expect the swimmers in his heat to bring out the best of him.“I’m assuming it will difficult (to qualify) and I will have to swim at my best. I’m pretty confident I can do it, and it just has to be done.“As for my heat, there’s no-one who I think can exactly push past me or be at the level I would like them to be at, but at the same time I’m not concerned about that. I’m just going to do what I need to do.”The 26-year-old is enjoying life at the Athletes Village where he is sharing an apartment with long jumper Tyrone Smith, track and field coach Brian Wellman, triathlon coach Neil de Ste Croix, sports therapist Richard Johnson and physio Sandro Fubler.“It’s been good (at the Village), it’s pretty normal really and nothing out of the Olympic ordinary has happened,” said Burch, who has posted photographs of him with USA’s Olympic tennis sisters, Venus and Serena Williams, on his Twitter account.“Usually my day consists of relaxing, a little bit of training and of course eating. Today I will probably go get a haircut and I have a day of rest so I’m ready for what I need to do.”Competing at the British National Championships in March enabled Burch to familarise himself with the lay-out of the of the Aquatics Centre in Stratford. With its distinctive architecture and curved roof, the £242 million centre is the first venue visitors see upon entering the Olympic Park.“It’s a great facility, the ideal facility; a ten lane 50 metre pool with a diving well separate . . . it doesn’t get much better than that.”The Charlotte-based athlete believes he is a far better athlete than when he competed at the Beijing Olympics four years ago, and has far greater confidence in his ability.“I’ve definitely improved since then. Before I moved to Charlotte I hadn’t made the final of a Grand Prix, but leading up to the Olympics I’ve made a bunch of A finals which has given me a lot of confidence. My preparations couldn’t have gone any better.”
