A much ballyhooed address — marked by fumbled broadcast

For weeks anticipation mounted for the wide-ranging and in-depth review on the state of public education to be unveiled.

Members of Parliament referred to the review, adverts were placed in local media and people attending public meetings were told it was their national duty to tune in and play their role in bringing about a change in the much beleaguered public education system.

Even yesterday afternoon Premier Dr. Ewart Brown told members of the Chamber of Commerce it would be hard to avoid the review as he had orchestrated a “media road block” so that every TV and radio channel could broadcast the important address.

Unfortunately 8 p.m. came and went with nothing. Not a single TV or radio channel aired the address.

Phone lines at The Royal Gazette rang off the hook with confused members of the public asking where it had gone? Had they missed it? Was it cancelled? No one knew.

Shortly before 8.20 p.m. Dr. Brown’s voice was heard on HOTT 107.5 only to disappear again minutes later and return again minutes after that.

After the half an hour address - which addressed key problems and made hard hitting recommendations for drastic change - radio personality Miss Thang came on and told listeners it would be televised a 9 p.m. before adding “well at least that’s the last thing I heard” conveying the confusion felt by many.

Later it was revealed that a technical delay caused the problem and the Government apologised for the inconvenience.

But it wasn’t just the Government who seemed to drop the ball.

Grant Gibbons - on his first day as Shadow Minster for Education - informed The Royal Gazette>he would not be watching the address or commenting on it last night - because he was attending a dinner.
