Man gave girl sexually transmitted disease

A Pembroke man who admitted to having sex with a 14-year-old girl, and in the process giving her a sexually transmitted disease, will be sentenced later this month.

Alvone McJuan Maybury, 21, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16.

Crown counsel Graveney Bannister told the court Maybury and the girl met and began a phone and text message friendship late last year.

Maybury bought the girl a cell phone in order to have direct communication with her outside her mother's knowledge but the girl gave back the phone when Maybury began sending her "rude" messages.

However, he continued calling her and eventually the two agreed to meet at her home.

The pair had sex and in the process, the teen contracted chlamydia.

She said it was her first sexual experience and when her mother found out, she called Police on February 12 and took her to a doctor for a pelvic examination.

She was diagnosed with chlamydia and Maybury was arrested.

He admitted to Police officers that he knew he had the sexually transmitted disease and had given it to her.

Maybury initially pleaded not guilty to the charges but later changed his plea.

He told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo yesterday that he had been unaware the girl was underage.

"She lied to me about her age, I didn't know she was 14," Maybury said. "She's doing a lot of lying, she kept on calling me all the time and the only reason she gave the cell phone back to me, was because her mother found out.

"I know I was wrong for going over her house without her parent's permission though."

At the time of the offence, Maybury was already on probation following a conviction for causing grievous bodily harm and wilful damage.

Mr. Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report before sentencing on May 30.

He released Maybury on $5,000 bail with one like surety.
