HRC<\p>board changes
Only three people who sat on the 2006 Human Rights Commission board remain this year.
Last year the HRC came under fire after dismissing complaints about then-Premier Alex Scott and PLP Senator David Burch. It found Mr. Scott had not breached the Human Rights Act in an e-mail mistakenly sent to entertainer Tony Brannon which said he was tired of “taking crap” from people who “look and sound like Brannon”.
And it ruled that Sen. Burch’s use of the term “house nigger” on his radio show was distasteful, not illegal.
The commission’s failure to produce annual reports, in compliance with the Human Rights Act, for the last five years also garnered criticism. Last June Rod Attride-Stirling, who was the chairman of the commission at the time, called for jobs to be lost over the issue and blamed the administrative staff for the delays in filing the reports.
A disciplinary hearing was held and the commission’s executive officer, David Wilson, resigned.
The reports have now been filed. Mr. Attride-Stirling stepped down as chairman in July, the same month that the resignations of HRC members Matthew Clifford and Kamal Worrell were made public.
Lionel Raynor and Lucinda Woolridge are still members of the commission. Meanwhile, Elliot Hubbard is now the Deputy Chairman of the HRC.
The other members who are no longer part of the commission are Kirsty Anderson, Chris Backeberg, Megan Lewin , Leslie Lowe and Tammy Richardson. Maryanne Scott, who served as deputy chairman and took over after Mr Attride-Stirling resigned, is also no longer a member of the HRC. The new commission is comprised of Stanley Douglas, Ed Forbes, Marcus Jones, Lorraine Lipschutz, Jennifer Lucarini, Winette Phillips, Alana Rogers and Robert Trew.
Other large Government boards which have seen changes are the National Training Board and Board of Education.
While Herman Tucker remains chairman of the NTB he has a new deputy, Francis Mussenden. Former deputy Michael Charles is no longer a member of the board.
The new members of the NTB are Winters Burgess, David Burt, Corte Gibbons, Duranda Greene, Diallo Rabain and Glenn Simmons. Among the members that are no longer on the board this year are Sandra Bain, Wendell Brown, Gavin Black, Joanne Chisnall, Dr. Charles Green and Roderic Pearman.
Current Health Minister Nelson Bascome is no longer the chairman of the Board of Education, the position has gone to former senator Raymond Tannock. His new deputy is Crystal Caesar, replacing former deputy Edwin Wilson.
Other new members to the board are Mia Allen, Allan Hunt, Diallo Rabain and Christopher Smith. The rest of the board remains the same apart from Jeffrey Conyers , Charles Gosling and Pandora Wright, who are no longer members.
