Inspired by landscape
HEATHER MACDONALD
Q: What is your medium?
A: Oils. In some of the pieces I have incorporated a technique in which I cut out canvas into various shapes to create textured effect. Three paintings, ‘View from Harbour Road’, ‘Study at Eden Rock’, and ‘Two Rock Dusk’, incorporate this technique.
Q: What is your subject matter?
A: The pieces are inspired by landscape, usually everyday scenes from my life. I am currently working in St. Barts, and included are some of the early pieces I painted when I arrived, such as ‘Islets de la Plage’, ‘Baie de Saint Jean 1 and 2’, and ‘Study of Eden Rock’. It has been really inspiring to be in a new environment especially after working on my last show in May. I’m usually creatively drained after a solo show, but living in a new environment has really motivated me to keep working and not take a break.
Q: How many paintings are you exhibiting?
A: Eight.
Q: How was your work selected?
A: I received an e-mail about the Invitational. The exhibition committee gave us some preferences as to what they were looking for, but it really was our choice what we submitted.
Q: What was your reaction to being invited to participate?
A: I was really honoured to be included. The e-mail came out of the blue. It was a really nice surprise to know that an organisation recognises you and invites you to show with a really well-established artist like Sharon Wilson. I was really excited and proud, although it is unfortunate that I wasn’t on Island for the opening, and to see the other artists’ work.
