Coach Logie optimistic after cricket 'open day'
A national training squad of roughly 25 cricketers will be picked within the next 10 days as coach Gus Logie looks to begin the post-World Cup era in earnest.
In the aftermath of an open assessment day at the National Sports Centre last Saturday — to which all aspiring national team cricketers for all age groups were invited to attend — the Trinidadian insisted he was now more optimistic about the future than he had been for some time.
A few members of the World Cup squad were present, including captain Irving Romaine, Dwayne Leverock and Kevin Hurdle, while there were a couple of other familiar faces on display like fast bowler Mackie Crane and now the back-in-favour George O'Brien jr.
"The day went very well. All the coaches were very pleased with the turn-out and the number of players who appear keen to represent their country at the different levels in the future," Logie said.
"We had quite a few players from the World Cup squad turn up, as well as a couple of other guys who I know about who were not part of the World Cup campaign. George (O'Brien) was there as well and I hope this is the start of a new chapter for him after all the previous problems.
"The plan from here is for the coaches of all the national teams to sit down and identify the players that have shown an interest in playing and then pick training squads from the names we have.
"As far as the senior national team is concerned, we've had a few retirements as everybody is well aware and those that haven't retired are no longer contracted to the (Bermuda Cricket) Board and have returned to their normal jobs.
"I believe the Board are in the process of working out the finances with Government and the sponsors and hopefully I'll be in a better position to talk about the future by the middle of next week.
"At the moment though the plan is to pick a provisional squad of between 20 to 25 players hopefully which will get together two evenings a week for practice.
"I'm very conscious though that the cricket season is not far away and I want as many national team players as possible playing for their clubs, leading by example and putting in good performances.
"It's so important that the quality of club cricket in Bermuda is high, which is why I want the senior players back helping out at their clubs and helping to raise the standard."
The BCB have released no official schedule for the national team as of yet, though it is understood that Bermuda's next major fixtures will not come until after Cup Match, when the team travel to Ireland and Holland for four-day Intercontinental Cup matches against the Irish and the Dutch.
There are also a slew of One-Day Internationals provisionally planned in October and November against Kenya and the United Arab Emirates — though these have yet to be officially confirmed by either the BCB or the International Cricket Council.
