An off-duty police officer was injured in an “unprovoked and violent attack” in the East End yesterday, the Commissioner of Police said. Stephen Corbishley said that the attack on the police officer would be “pursued robustly” by the Bermuda Police Service “not least as he is a representative of law and order in Bermuda and to send a clear message to persons who choose to be violent against anyone, whether it be a member of the public or a police officer, that they will be arrested and presented before the courts”. He added that the attack at the Clearwater Beach car park at about 4.30pm took place in front of the officer’s family. Mr Corbishley said: “The trauma they have suffered in seeing a loved one violently assaulted cannot be underestimated and makes this attack all the more serious and despicable.”Mr Corbishley said that the man had identified himself as a police office “to persons who were acting antisocially and with potential danger to members of the public”. He added that several people had been taken into custody in connection with the attack after information was provided by the public.Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security, said that he was “deeply concerned” to learn of the attack.
