Running rivalry: Players from rugby teams Teachers and Renegades will both be running in this year's May 24th Bermuda Half Marathon to benefit charities both in Bermuda and abroad. Among those running, or doing their best imitation thereof, will be (clockwise from 12 o'clock position): Graham Thomas, Richard VanLinden, Mark Stephenson, James Roobottom, Will Thomas-Ferrand, Phil Heaney, Mike Montgomery, Chris Naylor, Bobby Hurdle, Tom Greenslade, Stuart White, Nir Sadeh, Greg Fraser and Chris Way.

Hard tackling, hard drinking and with a fondness for post-match pie eating, it’s fair to say that the average rugby player isn’t exactly cut out for long-distance running.

But the big-hearted lads from the Renegades and Teachers clubs will be making an effort to overcome these handicaps and reach the finish line of the 13-mile May 24 Marathon Derby, all in the name of charity.

They confess it will be no easy task, but hope the spectators thronging the streets to cheer on some of the Island’s top endurance runners will also spare a shout for them as they push themselves to the limit.

It’s the first time the Renegades have participated in the event, and commenting on what the 15 players expect to face on the day, Will Thomas-Ferrand from the team admitted: “It’s going to be an absolute nightmare. Some people aren’t at all designed for running. The first three miles will be the furthest they’ve ever run.”

And although the players have been in training since the end of the season, he added: “Although some of the back line players may finish in a good time, the challenge for most will be just to get to the finish and support their team-mates along the way.

“We will all be wearing shirts with Renegades on, so it would be great if we could get some people to cheer us on.”

The team will be supporting three charities, Bermuda’s Sunshine League and St. John’s Ambulance, and a South African residential home called Nazareth House where children, the elderly, and AIDS sufferers are cared for.

Meanwhile, a 22-strong Teachers squad focus on helping the Bermuda Autism Support and Education Society, aiming to fund a workshop for afflicted families, plus play equipment for autistic children.

They participated in May 24 last year for the first time, so unlike Renegades they’ve already had a taste of what they are in for. “We ran very slowly and as a group. Like the Renegades, a lot of the players aren’t exactly made for long-distance running,” said Chris Naylor from the team. “We finished at the back of the field in two hours and 15 minutes. This year, the big boys are a little bit nervous, but everyone’s been putting the miles in in training.

“If we go at a slow pace and it’s not too hot and humid we will be alright. With 21 or 22 of us, at least people will see us coming”.
