The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs launched the North Hamilton Train tours on Thursday.

The tour takes guests to areas throughout North Hamilton, an area traditionally called the back of town. Train tour guide Michael Bradshaw will tell people the story of the development of North Hamilton, including the development of black businesses and life from the period of segregation in the 1940s to the present time.

During segregation, prominent black families opened businesses to meet the needs of those that lived in the area. These businesses included banks, shops, restaurants, furniture stores, grocery stores, dentists’ and doctors’ offices, night-clubs, schools, dress makers, barbers, bakeries and more.

Many significant black Bermudians, associated with the development of the North Hamilton area, will be featured in the tour. The train tour is a Heritage Month initiative.

The tour will run on Thursday evenings and start on Front Street outside Number 6 Shed and will run from 6 to 7.45 p.m. It will continue throughout the summer and end in mid-October.
