Youngsters benefit from after-school programme
Boys and girls from ages five to 13 are taking advantage of an award-winning after school youth programme that puts an emphasis on academics and youth development.
It is the second year for the scheme that is organised by the Young Men's Social Club (YMSC).
The youngsters have formed a football team called the Blue Birds, which is split into five age brackets.
A prize-giving ceremony was held to thank the programme's main sponsor, Colonial Insurance Group and to award parents, children and co-ordinators for their participation.
On hand for the presentation, were Minister of Environment, Telecommunications and E-Commerce Neletha Butterfield and Alan Peacock, of Colonial Insurance Group.
The educational programme includes after school tutoring and counselling twice per week with the help of qualified teachers and volunteers.
A weekly games night is held on Fridays at the Bermuda Cathedral hall. Organisers say the programme provides a safe and educational environment that fosters fun and learning.
YMSC was one of the recipients of this year's Drum Major Awards, which is awarded to community centres that focus on education.
The Bermuda Youth Development Network, an Island-wide system for adolescents, will soon provide training courses in trades and one-on-one tutoring sessions.
YMSC executive Melody Parris said the club's curriculum serves as a model for achievement and positive activities in an Island where many complain of a lack of activities for youth.
