Corporation of Hamilton looking for councilman, alderman

The Corporation of Hamilton is hanging out the help wanted sign, hoping people might be interested in running for office.

The city has a vacancy for Alderman and a vacant seat on the City Council. The election is expected to take place during the last week of May.

It was not clear last night if any candidates had thrown their hat in the ring with only a couple of weeks until election day. The exact voting day is unknown, but is expected to be announced soon, according to a press release.

Nonetheless Mayor Sutherland Madeiros is helping to get the word out.

He said: "I encourage anyone who's qualified and interested in the progress of the City of Hamilton to consider joining the team of Aldermen and Councillors. It's a great way to get involved in the running of this vibrant city, though the ideal candidate should have some time and flexibility in their daily schedule."

Both new elected officials will have agendas filled with development issues. Hamilton's future is at a critical point because space has become a rare commodity. The space premium has fuelled debate about how tall contractors should be allowed to build in the city. A Sir John Swan project was recently approved at ten storeys — a record high. The Mayor is currently heading up a review of the City of Hamilton 2001 plan which is widely considered outdated for a city constantly expanding.

Potential candidates interested to learn of eligibility requirements should contact Corporation of Hamilton Secretary Kelly Miller at 292-1234 or on e-mail: kmiller@cityhall.bm
