Sims suffers final-hole disaster
A horrendous five-over par 10 on the final hole cost Michael Sims at least a couple of hundred dollars and left him at the bottom of the pile after the final round of the Nationwide Tour Athens Regional Foundation Classic in Georgia yesterday.
The Bermudian pro had fought back superbly with a birdie and an eagle on the back nine to make only his second Tour cut of the year on Friday, following up his first round of three-under 69 with a one-over 73.
On Saturday he added another 73 at the 7,004-yard, par-72 Jennings Mill Country Club and yesterday put himself in position for a decent pay cheque, reaching the last hole at even par with three bogeys having been offset by three birdies.
But suddenly his game unravelled at the par-five 542-yard 18th, which only a day earlier he had birdied.
This time he finished with a disastrous 10, ballooning his final round score to 77 and leaving him on 292 — in 60th and last place among those who made the cut and with a cheque for $1,500.
The tournament was won by Martin Laird who finished at 16-under 272, one shot ahead of Justin Bolli and Jeremy Anderson.
