Teresa Burrows elected as Somerset Bridge’s first female president

The profile of Teresa Burrows in the domestic sports scene was given an additional boost when she was named the first female president of Somerset Bridge Recreation Club.

The 43-year-old had already played a leading role in the rejuvenation of the Western Counties Cup — long seen as the ugly stepsister to the ever-popular Eastern Counties — before taking this next step in her progression as a club administrator.

The competition, whose ranks were fortified in 2024 by PHC after a short absence, has shown signs of returning to the days of yesteryear when hundreds flocked to White Hill Field and Southampton Oval in alternate years.

The event has been restricted to White Hill in recent times, with emphasis put on enhancing the spectacle for spectators at one of the better watching venues on the island.

With the impetus provided by Burrows and her team, plus the inspiration of Somerset Bridge’s shock county success in 2023, the White Hill community has plenty reason to feel encouraged.

Burrows takes over as president from Marc Bean, who, after helping to secure the club’s immediate future, believes the time is ripe for the handover.

“Last year, we concluded a new 21-year lease with the Government, which opens the opportunity to consider redevelopment of the club facility and deepen engagement with our community,” as Bean of the club which also turns out the Somerset Eagles football team.

“As such, it was a good time for the club to have a new executive and management committee that could bring fresh vision, new ideas and energy.

“Teresa has demonstrated that energy and vision by rejuvenating the Western Counties Cricket Association as its president. I am confident that with the support of this strong and competent executive and management committee that the club is in good hands, and I am excited about its future.”

Burrows’s committee comprises Shane Hollis as vice-president, Quayunte Watson as secretary, Tracy Jones as assistant secretary and Callie Smith as treasurer.

The management team is Jumaane Davis, Damen Outerbridge, Mark Savery, Kacey Smith, Shane Proctor and Dion Bassett.

“It is an honour to have been elected as president of the Somerset Bridge Recreation Club,” Burrows said. “I look forward to collaborating with the executive and management committee, as well as our general membership, to elevate the club to new heights.

“I want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt thanks to our past president, Marc Bean, and all the members of the previous committee who dedicated their time, energy and finances to protect and maintain the club during often challenging times. Special thanks to Candice Burrows, Kevin Smith, Roger Lee, Timmy Telford, the late Kevin Burrows and others for their unwavering support.

“I believe we can unite and continue to strengthen the community by combining the expertise of the former committee with the fresh energy and new perspectives from our new team. This is the right move forward for our club and our community.”
