Seniors speak out about concerns at tea event

Robert King, the Shadow Minister of National Security, the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation, speaks to seniors at a recent event

Seniors shared their concerns about crime and healthcare costs at a recent event hosted by a Smith’s MP.

Robert King, the Shadow Minister of National Security, the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation, spoke to people at his second monthly Lunch and Tea for Seniors, a programme intended to connect and empower elderly residents.

Mr King said: “With seniors expected to make up 25 per cent of Bermuda’s population by 2026, it’s critical we listen to their concerns, share resources and strengthen their support networks.

“I’m thrilled by the turnout and the enthusiasm.

“It truly feels like we’re building a movement of seniors who are informed, connected and ready to help shape a better Bermuda.”

Mr King said the seniors raised several concerns such as the rising cost of healthcare, the need for stronger enforcement of the law, issues related to the Green Land Dairy Farm and a perceived decline in public courtesy, including on the island’s roads.

An OBA spokeswoman said: “Attendees expressed gratitude for the space to voice their thoughts and concerns and emphasised how empowering it felt to be part of a united effort to help change the island for the better.

“Future sessions will include topics such as cybersecurity safety tips and healthy ageing practices, along with continued open discussion and community-building.”

The next Lunch and Tea for Seniors is scheduled to take place on May 27, with the location yet to be announced.
