Tarik Christopher appointed chief engineer

A dedicated professional with more than two decades of experience has been appointed chief engineer in the Department of Works and Engineering.

Tarik Christopher will work under the policy direction of the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Public Works and Environment.

He will oversee the management of the finance, human and projects units of the department as well as its policies and standards.

The seven sections for which he is responsible include highways, structures, electrical and mechanical, solid waste, water and wastewater.

The Tynes Bay Waste-to-Energy Facility and the quarry facility also fall under his list of responsibilities.

Mr Christopher began his journey with the ministry as a bursary student and trainee in 2001 and rose through the ranks, serving as an operations engineer and, later, as principal of the water section.

Mr Christopher received the National Government Leadership award, on behalf of the Bermuda Government, from the Alliance for Polyethene Pipe for his work on implementing the use of high-density polythene pipe to replace legacy water and sewage mains as part of the water and wastewater master plan.

Before his appointment, he served in an acting capacity and was pivotal in advancing initiatives across the Department of Works and Engineering, covering key areas such as highways, Tynes Bay, structures and water services.

The role also included ensuring the safe and successful management of the department’s Emergency Measures Organisation responsibilities during Hurricane Lee in 2023 and Hurricane Ernesto last year.

During his career, Mr Christopher implemented a supervisory control and data acquisition programme, which allows managers to remotely monitor the island’s water and sewage apparatus.

He served as project manager on developing a water and wastewater servicing strategy for St George’s, which was later expanded to all the central and eastern parishes.

He also oversaw the expansion and final commissioning of the Tynes Bay Seawater Reverse Osmosis Plant.

Mr Christopher holds a bachelor’s in chemical engineering from Dalhousie University.

He is a professional engineer registered in Bermuda and Alberta, Canada and he also holds a graduate diploma in management from Athabasca University in Alberta.

Mr Christopher is completing a master’s, further enhancing his skills in leading the department.
