Suspended sentence for man who assaulted senior

A man who injured a senior was given a suspended prison sentence yesterday.

Reuben Curtis, 44, admitted causing Leonie Curtis grievous bodily harm and damaging her car when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in March.

The court heard that Curtis, from Warwick, grabbed and choked the victim after punching her car window in March 2024.

Ms Curtis injured her shoulder in the incident and the damaged window cost more than $3,000 to repair.

Curtis was initially ordered to participate in Mental Health Treatment Court but was deemed unsuitable for the programme.

He was resentenced yesterday after prosecutors dropped a suggestion that the offences occurred in an increased-penalty zone.

Prosecutor Seth Levine said Curtis committed the offences after losing his temper and suggested that he be sentenced to a six-month prison term suspended for three years.

Tiffany Butler, representing Curtis, said the incident stemmed from a “longstanding probate matter” between her client and Ms Curtis. She requested that her client’s prison sentence be suspended for 12 months.

Curtis apologised to the court and the victim for his actions, which magistrate Craig Attridge called “largely impulsive, spontaneous and relatively short-lived”.

Mr Attridge sentenced Curtis to three months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and gave him until August 29 to pay for the damaged window.
