Community groups supporting a ceasefire in Gaza have called on the Government to speak out and take action against “the existential crisis facing the people of Gaza".

The nine organisations are uniting for a solidarity walk scheduled to take place on June 21.

In an opinion piece in today’s edition, they acknowledge demands from Britain, France, the Netherlands and Canada to end the blockade of food, water and medicine into Gaza. They also support the nations’ calls for an immediate ceasefire and release of prisoners, United Nations oversight of humanitarian aid and long-term negotiations towards justice and peace.

Referring to Bermuda’s history of resisting injustice, the groups said: “We call on the Government and people of Bermuda to speak out and act in the spirit of our history, and invite them to join this growing consensus regarding the existential crisis facing the people of Gaza, thus acting from the best of our shared legacy.”

The local organisations involved in the walk are Imagine Bermuda, the Human Rights Commission, the Peace Collective, Social Justice Bermuda, the Bermuda Islamic Cultural Centre, Progressive Minds, Bermuda Is Love, Bermuda Wellness Space and Bermuda Youth Connect.

The Walk for Palestine is scheduled to take place on June 21 at 5pm, starting at the Cabinet Office and ending at City Hall.

The Government has been approached for comment.
