Top amateur golfers to compete in Stroke Play Championships

Damian Palanyandi is one of favourites for Stroke Play Championship

Bermuda’s top amateur golfers will compete for the Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Port Royal Golf Course this weekend.

With Kenny Leseur, the 2024 men’s champion, no longer eligible to play after turning professional this month, the title looks set to be contested by Damian Palanyandi, Eric West, Jarryd Dillas and Will Haddrell.

But they may not have it all their own way against up-and-coming talents Dylan Muso, Arman Newton and Sa-Qui Robinson.

There will also be a new ladies champion this year as Kim Botelho will not be defending her crown.

Vanessa Chychrun, the 2023 winner, is back and will be the favourite going into the tournament. Veteran Tracy Burgess will be hoping her experience at Pinehurst in the North & South Championships this week will stand her in good stead, while Island Games team members Morgan Lightbourne and Katrin Burnie will be looking to put together 54 good holes to challenge for a podium position.

Teenager Darina Betschart is returning from injury and raring to get back into tournament competition alongside Linda Down, Ann Symonds and 2024 Senior Ladies Championship winner Carine Brule.

In the Senior Men’s Championship, defending champion Scott Clark has not returned to defend his title, so former winners Arthur Jones, Hav Trott and Chris Phillips will be looking to challenge for the title.

Other players to note are former sports stars Mark ‘Beaver’ Ray and Kyle Lightbourne, who have both been producing consistent rounds this season.

The First Flight and Junior Divisions will consist of 36 holes played on Saturday and Sunday. The First Flight has 21 participants, which includes some very low handicaps that should make the competition extremely tight at the top of the leaderboard.

The Junior Division has six participants with the youngest being Lewis MacFarlane, who has won his division in the last four tournaments he has played.

Competition starts at 11.20am on Friday, 8am on Saturday and 7.30am on Sunday.
