Football legends come together to rekindle past

Clyde Best during his playing days with West Ham

Some of the greatest footballers Bermuda has ever produced will stroll down memory lane during a social gathering at The Reefs Resort & Club on Sunday.

Among those attending the Football Legends Fellowship will be former professionals Clyde Best, Gary Darrell and Sam Nusum who carved out names for themselves in their heyday playing in England and the United States.

Star striker and Bermuda Sports Hall of Famer Best was among the first Black players to play in England during a famous stint at West Ham, where he played alongside the legendary Bobby Moore, who led the Three Lions to their only World Cup triumph on home turf in 1966.

Best also played for Dutch side Feyenoord and North American Soccer League outfits Tampa Bay Rowdies, Toronto Blizzard and Portland Timbers.

Star goalkeeper Nusum played for North American Soccer League sides Montreal Olympique, Vancouver Whitecaps and New York Cosmos in the 1970s, where he played alongside late Brazilian legend Pele.

Former star defender and midfielder and national coach Darrell showcased his talents for Montreal Olympique and the Washington Diplomats in the 1970s and early 80s.

“Many former players from all clubs and who become legends in their own right through the football community are willing to share why their respective clubs were so powerful on the football field and were always a force to be reckoned with and why thousands of fans were willing to come out and support their teams back in the day,” an event spokesperson told The Royal Gazette.
