Charity team in Costa Rica for adventure of a lifetime
A group of Raleigh Bermuda participants are taking part in a ten-week expedition to Costa Rica where they will seek out adventures such as jungle trekking and mountain climbing.
The four young adults left Bermuda on Sunday to engage in projects focused on environmental sustainability.
These include ecological studies in the rainforests and community developments such as school construction and service with indigenous populations.
Members of the group will also build skills in resilience, survival and global awareness.
The team of volunteers is A'Vari Raynor-Hall, 21, Keanu Trott-Codrington, 20, Yari Mello, 18, and Azariah Greaves, 18.
A spokeswoman for Raleigh Bermuda, the local arm of Raleigh International, said: “Each student was awarded the Raleigh Bermuda scholarship valued at $20,000 per participant, covering the full cost of our yearlong programme including international expedition fees, travel, gear, training, vaccinations and support.
“We express heartfelt thanks to our community of donors whose generosity makes this programme possible and extend special appreciation to the families, guardians, Raleigh alumni, the Raleigh parent support group and community partners.”
Partners include the Department of Parks, Pathways Bermuda, the Pilot Gig Club, Tucker’s Transportation and the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard.
The charity said that the organisation had been “cheerleaders throughout the local training process”.
The spokeswoman gave special thanks to Keri Pacheco, a programme co-ordinator, Kaywell Outerbridge, a board member and parent liaison official, as well as Vernon Simons, Juvonne Cann and Matthias Lawrence, all project managers.
She added: “Their leadership, mentorship and unwavering support are the backbone of our youth’s success.
“The Raleigh Bermuda Venturers Scholarship Programme envisions a Bermuda where young people are inspired to rise above limitations, believe in their potential and join a global community of changemakers.
“Our venturers return on September 2 equipped as global leaders, environmentalists and survivalists ready to impact Bermuda and the world.”
