Katherine Bean-Rosario aims to cash in on final Leewards chance
Katherine Bean-Rosario is eager to make the most of her last year playing for Leeward Islands at the West Indies Rising Stars Women's Under-19 Championship in Trinidad.
The Bermudian all-rounder is in St Kitts & Nevis for a training camp, before heading off to Trinidad tomorrow.
Yesterday, she was announced in a final squad of 14 for the tournament starting on Tuesday, with her team-mates from Anguilla, Antigua and St Kitts.
Last year, Bean-Rosario played all six matches for Leewards as they finished second in the tournament. She went with Amara Richards but this time around, the national under-20 football captain has gone alone as part of an arrangement between the Bermuda Cricket Board and Cricket West Indies.
“This is my last year playing in this tournament so I’m going to try my best to make the most of it,” the 19-year-old said.
“The coaches seem impressed with my batting and bowling. I believe I will get a chance to bat and bowl because last year I only batted.
“I feel this year has a lot in store for my team. I can see the growth and I’m just excited to execute what we learnt in training.”
Bean-Rosario, whose cricket career stalled when she went to Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York, on a football scholarship, hit the ground running since arriving in St Kitts on Tuesday.
“The training has really been intense, we’re training from 8.30am up to about 3.30pm, sometimes 5pm,” she said.
“I’ve already noticed that the tips I’m getting from the coaches are helping me so much already, especially with my batting. On Thursday, my opening batting partner and I got 107 runs in six overs. That was really good and our coaches were impressed.
“On Friday, I also scored 60 runs, one of my highest scores in cricket, so I’m feeling sharp ahead of the tournament.
“I wish I had gotten more training at home but I’m just making do with what I got. I’m working really hard throughout the camp, putting my all and I’ve already seen a difference.”
