Simmons and Roach ready for rescheduled fights
Exactly a fortnight after their contests were rained out at Victualling Yard in Dockyard, Bermudian boxers Saundre “Dash” Simmons and Adrian Roach step into the ring against the same opponents tonight.
With the bouts shifted to The Shed, Dockyard, the stage is set for Simmons to go up against Jamaican Ian “Impact” Darby. Roach’s match with Canadian Brent Coxworthy, a four-round super-welterweight bout, will mark his professional debut.
Simmons, who is seeking to extend his flawless record (7-0), declared that he is even better prepared than he was two weeks ago. The North Carolina-based fighter has been working hard while keeping an eye on his weight.
“We were 100 per cent last time,” the 28-year-old told The Royal Gazette.
“The past two weeks have allowed us to hit the 120 per cent mark. I’ve been training hard and maintaining my weight.”
In an effort to attract better opponents, Simmons, who will be fighting in Bermuda for the second time, is keen to hit the ten-win mark by the end of the year.
Roach’s despair at missing out on his initial debut has turned into joy after Epic Entertainment rescheduled his fight.
“It’s almost like I’ve been past this moment before because we were supposed to do this two weeks ago,” the Bermudian said.
“The nerves aren't there. I feel like I’m much more in control this time around. I’m just ready for action. I’m coming in shape and it’s going to be a great night.
The 23-year-old stayed put on the island to keep himself in shape for what promises to be the biggest challenge of his career. Coxworthy, who made his pro debut in November 2022, has a 1-3 record, which gives the Bermudian great hope of victory at the first time of asking.
“His 1-3 record doesn't intimidate me at all,” Roach said.
“But that’s not to say he should be taken lightly. I think every opponent should be taken seriously and I've been training for him as if he was an undefeated prospect.
“It’s boxing; one punch can change the fight. He’s coming off a knockout win, so now he’s tasted victory. He’ll be looking to extend that and my job is to stop that.”
